independence day

so this year the fourth ended with an amazingly fun bang!!! soccer this summer has completely taken over my time. and not only my spare time, it has found me scheduling days off to watch games. july 4th was no different. as germany and italy geared up to play, i was getting ready to watch and play soccer all day. a world cup game, then playing some soccer in the park with friends, and then finally off the Colorado Rapids game to watch them take on the New England Revolution.

the day was beautiful until we sat down in our seats...then the rain came. after a 30 minute delay because of lightening, play resumed in the rain. other, less enthusiastic fans may have found themselves fleeing to their cars for safety, warmth, and dry but my friends and i...we stuck it out. and loved it. at least i did. i forgot how much i love the rain. i was drenched, in a jean skirt and heavy italy sweatshirt...and i loved it. by the second half the rain had subsided. the final whistle blew with the rapids winning 3-2 and then the fireworks began. i also think i forgot how much i LOVE fireworks. i was like a little kid in a candy shop. there was great music and loud, sparkling fireworks. i could not stop giggling like a kid. i think it was the whole experience, the entire day. an awesome day of soccer, a great storm, and wonderful friends.

but lest i forget the real reason for the day. as i sat spellbound by the canon-like booms and the bursts of light - the 1812 overture was playing - tears came to my eyes. i realized, i live in a place of freedom. freedom, which came with a price. for those men and women who gave their lives and time i have no words. spoken words serve no purpose to those not present, instead i will remember why it is i am able live and experience the freedoms i daily enjoy.
